About IAVS News

IAVS launches a third journal: Vegetation Classification and Survey

August 23, 2019

Since 1973, the journal Phytocoenologia has been published in collaboration with IAVS. Our involvement with Phytocoenologia will cease at the end of 2019, with the publication of the final issue of volume 49 and the Memorandum of Understanding between IAVS and the publisher of Phytocoenologia will end in May 2020.

We are excited to announce that IAVS will begin producing a new journal, Vegetation Classification and Survey (VCS) in 2020. This has been approved by an overwhelming majority of the IAVS Council. VCS will have the same scope, the same Chief Editors, and nearly all the Editorial Board members of Phytocoenologia.

VCS will be entirely gold Open Access, meaning that all papers will be freely available for download to anyone in the world. The journal will be published by Pensoft, an independent academic publishing company. The website for VCS is at the following link:

The schedule of Article Publication Charges (APCs) is currently being worked out and will be announced before the end of 2019. It will be designed to make publication in VCS affordable, with discounts and waivers for those who are unable to pay the full APC.

Vegetation Classification and Survey (VCS) is an international, peer-reviewed journal of plant community ecology published on behalf of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS). It is devoted to vegetation survey and classification at any organizational and spatial scale and without restriction to specific methodological approaches. The journal publishes both original papers that develop new vegetation typologies and applied studies that use such typologies, for example, in vegetation mapping, ecosystem modelling, nature conservation, land use management or monitoring. Particularly encouraged are methodological studies that design and compare tools or algorithms for vegetation classification and mapping, vegetation databases, and nomenclatural principles. Papers dealing with conceptual and theoretical bases of vegetation survey and classification are also welcome. While large-scale studies are preferred, regional studies will be considered when they fill important knowledge gaps or present new methods. VCS also contains permanent sections on Ecological Informatics and Phytosociological Nomenclature.

We invite you to submit papers within the scope of VCS. Instructions for Authors and the online submission procedure can be found at

If you have any questions about VCS, please contact the Chair of the Editors (
